How's my driving? How can I improve with Ash and Pukamon? Yes, they're original characters, but are they consistent, believable, etc? How do they come across?

Also: How is my cultural understanding? I'm not Australian nor of British descent, nor have I spent any time in Japan; while I've worked at Disney I wasn't DPI. If I've gotten something wrong, I'd love to know.

Ash is awkward enough to have three potential addresses: His home in Australia, Chatham Square in Florida, and his host family in Shinjuku. So if you've sent it to Japan, it's gonna take another week to get forwarded on to him; to Florida, probably another two...

[Voice sample for Ash. His accent's a little milder than this, having softened in the US.]

If you've used his number in the current incarnation of Digilife, it's probably his American one:
[English.] Hi, you've reached Ash Ward. I'll be in Japan until February 10th; after that I'll be back in Australia. Please update your contacts lists: My Australian number is +61 04 XXXX XXXX. If it really can't wait, my number in Japan is +81 80 XXXX XXXX [Japanese characters may recognize this as a Tokyo cellphone number]. I can't get messages on this number until I'm next in the US, which won't be until July. Please, update your contacts; again my Australian number is +61 04 XXXX XXXX. Thanks. [Beep! But listen to the boy, he's not going to get any messages on this until July.]

Australian number:
[English; mostly General Australian accent but going slightly midwestern American.] Hi, you've reached Ash Ward. Leave your name and number after the beep and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Thanks! [Beep!]

Did you seriously just try his Japanese number:
[Japanese, with a mildly American accent. His Japan pavilion friends were right.] Hi, you've reached Ash Ward. I'm at home in Australia now; please update your contacts lists: My Australian number is +61 04 XXXX XXXX. Again, my Australian number is +61 04 XXXX XXXX. Thanks! [Beep!]

Everything below this is from an old game ([livejournal.com profile] digilife). Character interactions from them no longer apply to Ash; however, personal history such as his work and travels do.

Alternately: Almost regular floods vs. potential hurricanes?

It's been a bit mad around here since my last post! In the past...whoa, month, I have:
  • Been lucky enough to avoid any more random portals, thank Mickey.
  • Had to buy Gomamon a new bed, because he doesn't fit his old one any more. We also bought him a scratching post but he broke it the first time he tried it. Those claws are strong!
  • Been looking for something else for Gomamon to do during the day, because my friend whose classes he was going to is now studying abroad in Italy, and Gomamon's also now too big to be smuggled along in a backpack. Plus, giant claws. Suggestions are welcomed; his complaints are starting to drive me crazy.
  • Mourned Australia's quarterfinal loss to New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup. But at least we came third!
  • Started seeing a lovely young lady in my Spanish class. Seriously, world, she's awesome.
  • Turned twenty-one, complete with a big fancy party which was actually better than my little sisters' for once. (Their birthday is the day after mine, and there's two of them so their birthday's usually a bigger deal.) Dad, Gomamon, my older sister, and some of my friends did some nice and mostly not embarrassing speeches, Mum cried, and a few of our old flatmates even managed to come in from different states or in our old roommate's case, New Zealand. It was great.
  • Won a bit of money on the Melbourne Cup for the first time, though of course the lady won more than me. We also both looked pretty damn sharp at the races (well, Gomamon's still laughing at the lady's hat), if nowhere near sharp enough to win any Fashions on the Field prizes. I'd show off, but the photos are on her camera.

So what have y'all been up to?

    [VOICEPOST]

[While the audio file is in Japanese, Ash has helpfully gone in later and transcribed this in both Japanese and English. It's a slightly deeper voice than Pukamon's, though still with that same youthfulness (hey he's only child level), and he still has the same accent; he does not have the same voice as Jyou's partner.]

I get from baby I to II on my own with time and food and all that.

I partner up, and don't evolve for twelve years. I'm eating and sleeping right, sure, but we're in very little real danger in that time.

First real fight in twelve years, my partner gets hurt, nothing; epic fail all round.

Second real fight in twelve years, my hurt partner's half-asleep and I evolve.

It's not like I've researched this or anything, but I always imagined we'd both be fully conscious when I finally evolved again. DISCUSS. I know most of you are way more experienced with the whole partnered evolution thing than we are.

Also, can I just say how much of a PAIN claws are? I can't use my iPod any more because I'm pretty sure I'm going to scratch it, and my accuracy on my oversized keyboard is way down.

Is anyone else here watching the Rugby World Cup? [text, Japanese and English]

I need someone to talk about it with who isn't from A) Australia (I tend to agree with most of my Aussie mates so we kind of just end up giving each other blow-by-blow recaps) or B) New Zealand (it always deteriorates into caps lock and/or screaming matches and accusations of bestiality).

Also, has anyone heard from Wallace or Michael since Irene? I really hope they're just busy and not hurt or anything; we've had a pretty terrible storm here in Melbourne today but nothing as bad as a hurricane or cyclone.

    Who: Ash, Pukamon; YOU! (OPEN)
    When: Thursday August 25th; evening
Where: Desert, Server continent, digital world
What: Real world city kid meets the digital world outback, and perhaps other Chosen/Tamers. Did I mention he's never been to the digital world before? Because he's never been to the digital world before.

    bla bla bla Melbourne )

There's a tall white kid and a Pukamon yelling at each other in Australian accented English in the middle of the desert. WHAT NOW? )
onlensreflex: (oh man you went there)
This morning I finally got my Maingate for this year. A Maingate is a Disney cast member's pass to get up to three people into the Disney parks free a certain number of times per year, and spouses or registered dependents of cast members get them too (so Americans, please marry me; I'd quite like a green card).

Pukamon met my managers at the end of my internship to see if he could be registered as my dependent (not that he's totally dependent on me but he's certainly not my spouse) and get his own Maingate, as well as all my other Disney benefits but he mostly cared about the Maingate. They said it wasn't really up to them but they'd pass it on to the people who are in charge of all that, and seeing as they never mentioned it again I kinda figured the higher ups were like, nah.

But I guess they weren't, because Pukamon got a Maingate too, and now he's flying around the house lording it over my little sisters. I think we might have just made company history.

The only problem is that non-cast members have to show a government issued photo ID when they use a Maingate, and Pukamon is less recognized by the government than my dog. I'm serious: My dog is registered with the state and microchipped; Pukamon's just flying under the radar.

I'm trying to look into getting some form of ID for him, but does anyone here have any experience with digimon and IDs? I figure the procedure would be different in different countries, but some precedent somewhere might help my case if it comes down to that.

My sister just e-mailed me the results of a survey asking ladies "What male actions can you just not help yourself thinking they look cute doing?". [The English version of this post links here instead.]

The score is "the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample":
Cut for table; not cut IC )

I only hit about half the things on this list, most of them in the lower half of the results. I guess Japanese girls will never think I'm cute :(

(OOC: Decomail apparently refers to HTML formatted e-mails, ie. e-mail with embedded graphics.)
    onlensreflex: (not laughing really)
Anyone else looking forward to the World Cup final on Sunday? (Women's football, Japan vs. the US, for the confused.)

Naturally I'm disappointed that my own team didn't make it past the quarter finals, but this is amazing for Japan: They've never reached the finals before. So GO JAPAN! I will be dead on my feet for class in the morning but staying up for the game will be so worth it.

(For all the time I spend in the US compared to Japan, I still can't bring myself to care about American sports teams. :|a Sorry, Americans.)
    onlensreflex: (clocked in)
Pukamon and I would like to wish the Americans on here a happy Fourth of July!

May you have a better one than I will: I'm back at Disney World for the next two weeks and working most of today. This place gets a little crazy at holidays, and Pukamon's playing at the parks today with some friends of ours so no doubt he'll come visit to rub it in my face. I just hope I'll be sent to World Showcase for the fireworks tonight, considering how cool last year's were. If any of you guys are playing with fireworks, stay safe!

Digimon with working partners, do you ever visit your partners at work?
    onlensreflex: (Pukamon: duty)
Pukamon here! Ash's sister's been nagging us to come visit her (it's been hard between Ash's work and wandering off out of state; usually we just meet up for a coffee or something), so now that we're settled back in Melbourne, we spent last weekend at her flat in town.

And her boyfriend is a prick! Really condescending to me: I'm not interchangeable with the dog; I'm not going to play fetch. And I eat real food! Even make real food sometimes. Just ask our old flatmates! Honestly, Ash's managers treated me better!

He wasn't the nicest to Ash, either (mocking his job when the furthest abroad he's been is New Zealand; okay, then; won't be seeing you in Florida in two weeks), so we didn't spend the whole weekend there. But Kenzie seems really happy with him (I hear they got together last year) and swears she's gonna talk to him about it, so I guess we'll be seeing him around for a while. Ugh.
    onlensreflex: (we go on)
One of my friends posted this video on Facebook:
    not cut IC )

Chichos and Maria will probably be able to understand what all she's saying better than me (my one semester of Spanish is not much help here) but from what I've read [Japanese only: (English link, sorry guys)], it's a kindergarten teacher keeping her class calm with a singalong while there's a freaking gunfight going on outside.

I'm lucky enough to have grown up in a fairly safe city. When I went to school, we just had fire and earthquake drills, not shoot out drills like this kindy apparently has. The most dangerous thing I've ever really faced is a digimon invasion when I was eight. If it happened again now, or if there was a gunfight right outside my campus, I'd be scared out of my mind, in a different way from if the city got flooded again: No one can control a natural disaster, but you kind of know someone's behind a digimon attack or a drug war and could try to stop it. Either way, I'd be too scared to really think of anyone else.

Maestra Alanis was scared and still had the strength of mind to try and help her students. I only wish I could be as brave as her. (Or date a girl as brave as her, in the hopes that it will rub off on me. :)
    onlensreflex: (not impressed)
Dear G'day, teacher who is still convinced I'm American even after one term,

I lived in Florida for a year and worked there on break. This does not make me American.

I'm as Aussie as you are. No, you're a second generation Greek immigrant; I take that back: I can trace my family back to one of the first bloody convicts1; I'm more Australian than you are2.

I ride my kangaroo to class every day, where I turn in aerial photos of my pet koala taken by attaching my camera to a boomerang. At lunch I have Vegemite sandwiches and a pint. After class I go surfing and only barely avoid being eaten by sharks or stung by jellies, and when the sun goes down, I go and wrestle some crocodiles for fun. My sisters glow and I plunder. For dinner I toss another prawn on the barbie. At night I camp by a billabong under the shade of a coolabah tree.

My Christmas dinner was a roast ostrich. That I had Mum send me from my backyard. Because I'm that Australian.

In fact, I'm so Australian that I'm pretty sure my Digimon partner's going to evolve into a platypus one day.

Going to wear a cork hat to class tomorrow and finish every sentence with "mate", mate,

    Ash

1: I'm joking. My auntie who's been doing the family tree says our ancestors were legit emigrants.
    2: Also joking.

This whole post is a joke but I figured those two were the most blatantly offensive.

(OOC: I myself am actually a first/second generation immigrant (I was tiny) to New Zealand; if anyone told me in seriousness they were more of a New Zealander than me, a ditch would be smacked. :|)
